birds boutique cafe . very nice

where to start. namibian fairies working wholesome wonders in the half-hidden kitchen. the mother - a bread baking matriarch - that will trade secret camping recipes with a curious guest. one daughter responsible for design of cards (loves that they are printed in london), menus, signs, rooms. the other daughter - slow food enthusiast, who - not entirely unrushed - somehow manages to keep everything in balance (and wonders why the cards have to be printed in london).

cape town needs bird’s boutique. more than it knows. somehow the clean, kantine-style, interior manages to absorb that sticky and self-indulgent pretentiousness that makes so many of us want to leave this place all the time. birds is one of the reasons why we can’t. you step inside, close and lock the bottom part of the stable doors behind you, sit down, breathe in, breathe out … it’s like coming home.

things here move at the right speed. hand-written menus (pencil!) are stacked into bird books (some in German). the food changes every day. the drinks stay the same. favourites are the homemade lemonade (how can a drink remind you of a summer in the 50s when you weren’t even born then?), the orange/banana squeeze (what a combination - i had no idea) or any of the teas.

the quiches are amazing. the sandwiches heaped sculptures of simple, great, ingredients …. i am not sure what, but something happens, when you manage to get all the different tastes into your mouth at the same time. when you close your mouth around one bite of smoked chicken, avo, tomatoe, mozarella, sprouts, seeds, and greens (oil and balsamic vinegar), time does stop for a moment. i promise!

the postmodern cheesecake deserves its own paragraph. yes, there is a hint of lemon. it is baked on a wheat-free (but as if it didn’t care) crust, layered with poppyseed and raisin. the mountains of creamy (but light) yumminess rest on top - unimpressed even by the scoop of fresh farm cream next to it. did i forget to mention the sprinkled powder sugar?

they play bird sounds from LP.

enough - please don’t come. if i can choose one thing in cape town that i want to stay just the way it is … then please let it be this one (table mountain? who cares).
